If her neck strap is plastic, she has probably been to the American Girl Doll Hospital before; I've heard they use a plastic tie. You can request that they use the regular strings instead, though.
How are her eyes different? If one has a "pinwheel" look, or is silvery-white, it's what is known as "silver-eye". This is a manufacturing defect, and the AG hospital should fix it for free. You can request that they just replace the eyes, or they'll replace the whole head. If they do replace the head, it will be the new kind, NOT the pre-Mattel kind with the artist's mark. With eye replacement, there is a risk that the head will rip, and they would wind up having to replace the whole head, anyway. That's the chance you take with a pre-Mattel doll, and some people decide to live with the silver-eye rather than try to have it fixed, and some decide to risk the possible new head rather than live with the silver-eye. It's a very individual decision.
I don't know for sure, but I don't think having her eyes fixed will make her worth less; I do think silver-eye would make her worth less, though.
You can mail her to the hospital--see the americangirl.com website under "customer service" for instructions--for a free repair, they usually pay the return shipping; I would call their customer service number and find out all the details before mailing them my doll, however.
Now, about the "artist's sig." you mentioned--did you mean the incised artist's mark behind the right ear, or an actual signature on the doll's body? The artist's mark would mean she's pre-Mattel, but a signed doll (if she were signed by Pleasant Rowland, the company's founder) would definitely be a collector's item.
If she smells musty, I've found that spraying her lightly with Febreze works very well.
Hope this helps to answer most of your questions!
And welcome to the board!!

My PM, WB Kirsten is all worried that I might send her away - I'm NEVER sending her in for silver eye now! I think her skin tone is so pretty as it is; I don't want to run the risk of a new head, and possibly them sending me a new doll just because they couldn't match her new head to her body. Don't worry, Kirsten; we love you just as you are.

She has two different eyes and her neck strap is plastic.
Anyone know why?

Do I have to bring her to a A.C hospital to get her eyes fixed or can I mail her?

What about resale value having her fixed will that make her worth less?

She smells slightly musty how do you remove the smell?

She's also marked with the artist sig- Is this worth more?

If she gets her eyes fixed will they just fix the eyes or give a whole new head?

If they do replace the head will it have the artist marks?

Having the eyes different is this what the term silver eye means?

thank you all
Ketzel
